Boathouse

A kayak house as an experiment in materiality and off-grid passive design.

A kayak house, cabin and loft on a lake in rural Iowa. The design of this boathouse was driven by three principal factors:

  1. The practicalities of storing and deploying kayaks, resulting in a cantelivered design projecting over a portion of the lake.

  2. Thermal comfort via passive design. The structure is unconditioned. Extensive thermal comfort analysis was undertaken to see how many months could be kept comfortable through passive measures alone. These measures include sun shading, natural ventilation, and insulation.

  3. Material expression. The lightweight wood structure is defined by repeating interlocking elements with exposed fasteners. The interior "cabin" is enclosed by translucent polycarbonate panels, which provide insulation and privacy, and illuminate the boathouse like a lantern at night.

The cabin will have electricity but no other utilities. Therefore, the design includes a composting toilet and rainwater capture and treatment for non-potable uses (shower and lavatory).
